A few years ago I saw a Youtube video of a dad curling his daughter’s hair using a pencil and a straightener; and for some reason, my brain drudged up that memory recently! So I decided to give it a go because ever since posting my hairstyles on Instagram, I’ve loved coming up with new looks. This one is very Mamma Mia, and I couldn’t get over how voluminous and shiny my hair looked in these curls.
Also!! The best part was that they lasted for 4 days! I usually wash my hair every day or every other day because it gets greasy quickly, but with these curls keeping my hair away from my face, my roots stayed fresh longer. So, I guess it was worth the 45 minutes it took to create them!
How to get perfect pencil curls:
1.) Grab a wooden pencil and a straightener. I used a white colored pencil.
2.) Separate your hair into sections so you can do one piece at a time. Take a small section of hair and wrap it around the pencil. For more voluminous curls, be sure to wrap all the way to the root.
3.) Take your straightener and clamp it over your hair-wrapped pencil. Run the straightener back and forth so the heat activates all the hair on the pencil. It shouldn’t take more than 5-10 seconds!
4.) Let go of the pencil and it should fall, revealing a perfect spiral. Repeat all over your head until each piece is curled.
5.) Do not brush your hair unless you want a very poofy look! Just take the curls and gently separate them with your fingers. Keep separating pieces until you get the desired volume and fullness.
6.) Enjoy your new look!
7.) I used a Pravana hair oil to tame any frizz and then flipped my head upside down and fluffed my roots to make the curls sit up and away from my scalp.
